Check it out!

On Monday and Wednesday's we have mixed up our normal routine and have added Leader Exercises! Each student has the opportunity to lead the class in 3 exercises after we do our warm-up. The student picks the exercises and leads them and the rest of the class follows, they basically get to teach the class! Some students do the usual such as jumping jacks, and push-ups, but some students also add in exercises or stretches they have learned at dance, karate and wrestling. Below are some 1st Grade students doing their Leader Exercises.

After our warm-up and exercises we all go to the white board and talk about what we are going to be doing for the day!

Dribbling Stations

One of our stations for dribbling was the 20 Club. If the students could dribble 20 times in a row without stopping or having their ball go away from them, they got to put their names on the 20 Club board. Students were very excited to make the club and if they didn't they could try again throughout the week!

Feed the Frogs

Feed the Frogs:

Lily pads (hula hoops) spread around the general space. When music starts students dribble their frog (basketball) and make it jump up to their waist. When music stops students go around and try to feed their frog as many flies (poly spots) as they can. In order to eat a fly their ball has to hit a poly spot while being bounced. A lot of movement in this activity and a challenge to dribble in such a small space!

Students finishing up our dribbling unit by taking a short little assessment.

Card Sharks

One of the games we played last week during our Dribbling Unit was called Card Sharks. Each student had a basketball and there were poly spots spread around the general space. Students would dribble when music started and go to all of the different poly spots. If the poly spot had a card underneath it they would dribble that amount of times.
Example: 9 of hearts, student would dribble 9 times and move on to a different poly spot.

Some students tried to challenge themselves by dribbling while bending over and flipping over the poly spot.

Dribbling Speedway

Our dribbling speedway had a lot of speed bumps and crazy drivers! If you hit a speed bump (cone) you needed to take your car to a pit stop. If your car stalled or you went off the road, a pit stop was in order. We had 5 different pit stops along the wall that the students would go to. When dribbling we need to focus on using our finger pads, keeping our eyes up (forward) and dribbling waist high.

Pit Stops:
Dribble in place 20 times
5 push-ups
10 sit-ups
Dribble with each hand 10 times
20 Jumping Jacks

Dribbling Unit

It is good to be back after that "polar vortex" of cold! We are starting our DRIBBLING unit and will go into next week with it just because of the missed days we have had. We will not be doing a Fitness Friday this week so we can play catch up. Yesterday the students were introduced to dribbling. We talked about using our finger pads when dribbling along with pushing the ball with our hand and arm and trying not to dribble higher than our waist! Needless to say they blew my expectations out of the water and did awesome.
I'm going to have to challenge them more in the coming days :)
