Fitness Friday-How does our heart work?

It is FITNESS FRIDAY!
Today we discussed how the heart works and how the blood travels through the heart and body. The heart is made up of 4 chambers: right and left atrium, right and left ventricle. The blood travels through the right atrium, right ventricle and then to the lungs. After the blood leaves the lungs it makes it way back to the heart and goes through the left atrium and left ventricle. It's job then is to bring "oxygen rich" blood to the rest of the body and then repeat.  We put the blood flow in motion by setting up an obstacle course to show how our blood travels. Here a few snapshots of how it looked. Such a fun time and the students sure seemed to enjoy it!

2nd Graders moving to the lung and going through the left ventricle.

2nd Graders going through the right atrium.
We have traveled through the right side of heart, now off to the lungs!

Food for thought...

Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body,
it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.

Meet Skelly!

This is Skelly, our new friend in Physical Education class. Skelly is going to be helping us locate our bones, muscles, organs and such on FITNESS FRIDAY'S. He will be in our classes for the remainder of the year so if your child is talking about Skelly, you now know who he is :)

Today we learned about the heart:
*Where is it located?
*How big it is?
*What does it do?

Rod, Penny, and Lightning : The Straight Story

On Thursday we listened to a movement story about our friends Rod, Penny and Lightning. During the story the students were to move their bodies in the general space just as the characters were doing. Rod was a very straight little boy and even his smile was straight. Rod was only able to travel in straight pathways. Penny was Rod's friend and she was very curvy and round. Penny could only travel in curved pathways and she wanted to try to help Rod become less straight. They went to an amusement park to try and make Rod's joints more bendable. They rode on a roller coaster, merry go round and a ferris wheel but Rod was feeling kind of sick after that. So Penny thought she would try one more thing so they went horse back riding. Rod rode Lightning the horse and Lightning only would travel in zig zag pathways. He galloped, ran and even walked in only zig zags. After their adventures were over, Rod felt more bendable and was able to move his joints more and finally was not so straight! He could move in curved, straight and zig zag pathways.

Space Awareness

We have been working on our Spatial Awareness and adding more to our general and personal space. During this activity the students were to make a shape or letter by using the bodies of all of their team members. We made different letters like E, T, L, and A and different shapes like a Square and Circle. It was fun to see the students working together as team!

Fitness Friday

ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT FITNESS FRIDAY??

See if they can remember what we talked about today in P.E :)

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!!!!!!

Great TEAMWORK!!!!!

This week we have been focusing on TEAMWORK and what it looks and sounds like. The students did a number of relays such as the Bean Head and the Duck Walk along with the Hoop Da Loop. Students got into their teams or were in boy/girl groups while making a circle. Once they were ready I would give each team a hula hoop and the students would try to get the hula hoop around their circle without letting go of hands. I saw a lot of teamwork and encouraging words!

Great first week!!!!!

What a great first week of school (2 days actually but who's counting)! We learned about our warm-up that we use everyday, 5 star listeners, taking a break and our 4,3,2,1 grading system. I will get more in depth about those in later posts but just a little overview for you all. I am very excited to get this 2nd week off and running because we will be focusing on TEAMWORK!

Stay tuned for more fun exciting adventures in P.E :)
